Save Manitoba's Bar

I got this from Tracy at Duff's Brooklyn, so I am putting it here for all you drinkers and fans of live music on the LES:

Effective immediately, Manitoba's (yes, the bar owned by The Dictator's own Handsome Dick Manitoba) has been forced to stop all live performances due to a neighbor couple that seems to have ignored the fact they purchased their apartment at an extremely low price because they live directly above a Rock N Roll bar that features live music!!

The bar had a hearing on Feb. 13 brought by complaints from the upstairs douchebags that have been harassing them. The bar lost but they're fighting back and are going to hit these assholes with a big lawsuit.

Live music might return pending a legal hearing, but for the time being the bar must bring it all to a screeching halt. If you see their selfish neighbors, please feel free to throw eggs.

But...YOU CAN HELP!!

They need to find the dates of every day they've had shows there going back to September 2006...that way they can show that the bar's revenue is harmed by the lack of shows, etc.

So, If your band has played Manitobas btw Sept. 2006 and Feb. 2007 send that information to Kevin at barflypro@netscape.net

We don't believe the upstairs douchebags have a chance, but again if you played there during that time, You Can Help!

Let's not lose another live venue, not to mention one of the best places in NYC for free punk shows. Dick's been a great supporter- lets support Him now.

Read Joanna's Blog, the Best One About Bartending

How many of you know about Joanna's blog? She has it on Myspace, which is a good way to get people to find out about it. Jo is, of course, the senior bartender at Doc Holliday's, and has been working there since the day it opened, which was back when JFK was in office.

If you really want to know what a bartender in NYC goes through, let Jo tell you. She is a very very good writer, and a astute observer of all that goes on in front of (and around) her bar. I always get a kick out of reading it. Here is something from today:

On my way back behind the bar, Mr. Wild Turkey tried to corner me, but I sped past him, brushing him off by telling him, I had to take care of something.

I finally got the troublemaker out, but he shortly returned, shouting that he left his wallet on the bar. I curtly told him, he did not leave it here, but he ignored me and continued to look for it, and started to accuse customers of lifting it.

His scrambling around happened right at shift change, when it was time for me to close out my day, and just at the beginning of the night girls shift. We both told him to leave. He was making a spectacle of himself, and of course the bouncer was running late.

Jo always has a way with words, which all her regulars know from being her loyal customers. I like this bit from a little while ago:

Sometimes, I may get carried away, crawling in the liquor, knocking over bottles and glassware, accusing the crowd of not drinking enough, forcing girls to spread their wings and join me on the bar.

All my intention is, to entertain the masses, make their weekend memorable, and the party a success. I never intend to ruin anyone's night...and in the near 13 years of bartending, I cannot recall ever doing something in the name of fun, that ended badly. On purpose anyway.

Okay, perhaps your occasional girl falling off the bar, but god knows, no one ever intended that. We go far to ensure nothing bad happens.

Apparently, last friday's 2 am show extravaganza, has turned into a drama laden event, that has lowered people to kindergarden level behavior.

Want to know what happens next? Read Jo's blog and find out!

Save the P&G Bar

One of the oldest bars around is the P&G Bar on the corner of Amsterdam and 73rd Street, across the street from the Apple Bank For Savings, and just down the street from Time Out. This is among the greatest bars on the Upper West Side. However, according to the Times, its days are numbered.

The bar has been told by the co-op board of the building it occupies (since World War II) that it is going to lose their lease. The building wants a different kind of tenant. Recently in a show of support, the owner of Rudy's in Hell's Kitchen and some pals went to P&G to sign a petition to save the place. Check out this amazing and funny video of the proceedings:

It would be great to organize an nycbp.com night to go to the P&G, have some drinks, and sign the petition.

Hopefully this classic bar, with one of the nicest neon signs left, is not closed down.
