1. Getting too fucked up.

2. Inviting the wrong fucking people. Of all the things that can make a party go wrong, inviting the wrong people is key.

3. If you don't know someone very well, don't invite him.

4. If you know someone is an asshole, an angry drunk, someone likely to be disrespectful to others at the party or the performers, don't invite those people.

5. DO NOT invite the in-laws! Why pay all this money to be entertained if you're going to be inhibited? This is your last night to lose your inhibitions and have a blast. Why have your boss there? Or your father-in-law there? Or people who you feel uncomfortable in front of. Don't think that you owe it to people to invite them -- think of making the party work right for you.
